Speedway Classic is a computer racing game similar to Position by Atari. Game play is very simple, there the player steers with the joystick or keyboard. The view of the track is a three-quarters rear view. The player just races around in a car constantly turning left and avoiding other traffic. If the player hits another car or goes off the road then points are deducted from the starting bonus of 3000. If a player hit another car and explodes in a "fire collision" then more points are deducted.

Player starts off in the 20th (last) position and tries to reach first place. There are three different skill levels in this game easy, medium and hard. Easy is almost too easy and hard is nearly impossible. The graphics are OK for the apple compared to other games of the time. The animation is good and the music is great. The starting sweep screen features a parade leader of a marching band and a blue white checkered flag.
